Bath B&B Guide Bath Region
Developed around the site of ancient thermal springs, Bath known as Aquae Sulis by the Romans, is an exciting and marvellous city known for the grandeur of its Georgian and Regency architecture and a vast wealth of glorious heritage sites.
See the real gems for yourself and visit the Royal Crescent, a magnificent building of 30 grand houses, ornamented with 114 Ionic columns completed in 1774. There is a unique surviving public boating station where traditional wooden skiffs, punts and canoes can be hired, or you can visit the Pump Room and enjoy a natural, healthy and invigorating glass of spa water drawn from the fountain, but the first stop for any visitor to Bath are the ancient Roman Baths. The Great Roman Temple and bathing complex was built almost 2000 years ago is reputed to rank as one of the country's finest ancient monuments, still flowing with naturally hot water today. Adjacent to the springs, excavations have uncovered a major temple devoted to the goddess Sulis Minerva whom the Romans would pray to in the belief that she would cure their ailments before taking the plunge into the therapeutic sacred waters. The springs were thought to be a gift from the gods because of the vast amount of hot mineral water that flowed incessantly and appeared to come from nowhere!

Standing right in the heart of the city is the Abbey in all its splendour of Georgian stone crescents that have attracted visitors for centuries. This amazing building stands on the site of a 8th century Saxon Abbey. Bath Abbey was destined to become the most important house of worship when in 973 AD, Edgar, Prince of the Royal House of Wessex and King of Mercia was crowned in the presence of the Archbishops of both York and Canterbury and King Edgar became the first monarch to rule over England. As you walk through the grand doors, don’t forget to look up to the ceiling and admire the 16th century’s impressive design. Bath Abbey Heritage Vaults Museum should be on everyone’s agenda, it keeps alive the story of the Abbey's past where you can enjoy a comprehensive presentation celebrating 1600 years of the Abbey’s history in sights and sounds enjoyable for all the family.

The oldest park in the city of Bath is Sydney Gardens and is definitely a must visit, arguably the finest in the country, steeped in history and overlooking the River Avon with stunning views of Pulteney Bridge and the Weir. You must take a relaxing stroll through the park as it contains wonderful old trees, shrubberies, lawns and interesting flower beds, tennis courts and a children’s play area, famous visitors include members of the Royal Family and the great writer Jane Austen, who is perhaps the best known and best loved of Bath's many famous resident when she lived there from 1801 to 1806. Her intimate knowledge of the city is reflected in two of her marvellous novels set in Bath, “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion”. There are four distinct parks in the community surrounded by trees, lawns and flowers offering peaceful walks, you'll also find an exciting and varied nightlife, mouth-watering cuisine and unique shopping opportunities can be found around almost every corner. The unusual American Museum in Britain is of importance too, the museum exhibits period rooms on how Americans lived during the early New England Settlers era to the eve of the Civil War. Other attractions include an 18th century Massachusetts Tavern.
