It is sheltered by the rolling South Downs and the awe-inspiring 530 feet above sea level, Beachy Head the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. From the top it boasts wonderful panoramic views of waves lashing against rugged cliffs and shrieking gulls, and if you look east from this grand vantage point, you not only see the town and its pier and harbour, but the magnificent surrounding beaches stretching for miles and miles far off up to the Isle of White. The waterfront is full of charming pubs and eclectic restaurants with a wide selection of shops and things to do and you can walk along five miles of promenade leading you past the stunning Carpet Gardens, the famous 1930s bandstand situated on the seafront off Grand Parade where you can dance the night away to live music, it is one of the most distinctive sights in Eastbourne especially the blue dome and golden finial. It also has one of the most sophisticated and prettiest marinas in Europe. Eastbourne has a thriving sailing and watersports scene where you can have a go at windsurfing and canoeing, or take a pleasure boat trip along the spectacular coast. Enjoy the views and watch the vessels coming and going in the locks, or visit the picturesque boating lake, home to an interesting flock of swans. Hire pedaloes and rowing boats, take part in the family fun on the Royal parade in Honda-powered Formula One Go-Karts, or try the new American Adventure 18 hole Crazy Golf, situated in nearly 2 acres of landscaped gardens with beautiful water features. You’ll find a huge variety of activities in the region including cycling, absailing and rock climbing along the coastal region. There are also many parks and some stunning countryside walks to visit and enjoy, about six miles north-west of Eastbourne you’ll find the mysterious guardian of the South Downs, ‘The Long Man of Wilmington’ carved in chalk the huge figure is seen holding two poles. The origin of the giant remains a mystery, based on legends and the archaeological digs of the area he could be dated as far back to the 4th century AD. We may never know!
