About 140 tall ships were built in Whitehaven until 1840. With over 250, mostly Georgian Listed Buildings, a pretty marina and additional water based activities with premier cruising harbour and the Haig Colliery Mining Museum. The Beacon, overlooking the harbour, tells the history of the town and you can learn all about rum and the smugglers, "The Rum Story, the Dark Spirit of Whitehaven", Lord Byron said of rum: "There's nought no doubt so much the spirit calms as rum and true religion". In addition to imports of tobacco from Virginia, Whitehaven has famous American connections, one being the first president of the United States, George Washington, it goes back to Whitehaven where his grandmother, Mildred Gale, lived for a very short time. A plaque to her memory is in St Nicholas's Church tower, climb to the top via a narrow spiral sandstone stairway to see the workings of the 150-year-old clock and bell. Outdoor enthusiasts will note the start of the 140-mile long C2C cycle route that leaves from Whitehaven's harbour to Sunderland in the east.
