  Inn Amenities

Situated in a centrally located private terrace of tall, elegant Victorian Houses in a preservation area with private parking, Glenaldor House is only 10 minutes walk from the town centre and a few minutes walk from the railway station. There is good food available in restaurants nearby.

Dumfries is an ideal centre for a short breaks, for golf, shooting and fishing, walking, cycling or horse riding or even just shopping and sightseeing. With such a cultural heritage, being the place where our National Bard, Robert Burns, lived, loved and died. His legacy is historical sites, house, museums, heritage centre, mausoleum and famously, the Globe Inn. Famously too, J.M. Barrie, who wrote Peter Pan etc, lived in the house next door to our Guest House whilst he attended Dumfries Academy.
Visit the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, only 80 miles away, as is Stranraer and the Ireland ferries. Carlisle, Gretna, Annan, Lockerbie and Moffat are a mere 30-45 minutes drive, as is Galloway and its scenic beauty.

We are open all year round except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Guests can choose between en suite rooms and standard rooms. Extra single beds can also be provided. All rooms have television, tea and coffee making facilities and electric blankets.

The bedrooms are decorated to a high standard.

A Full English or Scottish cooked breakfast is provided in the cost of £23 per person per night in an en suite room and £18 per person per night in a standard room.

For your extra comfort and safety there is no-smoking throughout.

  Area Activities

In this relatively quiet corner of Scotland there is much to see and do. Dumfries, the capital Town of Dumfries and Galloway, has its share of attractions and activities. If you are a sports lover, there are a number of golf courses near at hand, together with many other facilities to take up your time and energy. Children will also find much to do, whether it’s outdoors, playing tennis by the beautiful River Nith that divides the Town in two, or ice skating at the nearby Ice Bowl.

If you wish to tour the area, a short drive in almost any direction will take you into scenic views, particularly the Solway Coast route to Sandyhills and Rockcliffe, or even further afield to Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright.

Whatever your pleasure, Dumfries will almost certainly provide for your adequate entertainment. We at Glenaldor House will most certainly provide for your comfort and hospitality.

Mountain Biking - Riding the 7 Stanes is the ultimate experience for mountain bikers and the tracks at Glentrool, Kirroughtree, Dalbeattie, Mabie, Ae and Tweed Valley are all within 20 mins to 2 hours drive from Dumfries.

History and Wildlife - The area is steeped in history and perhaps our most famous local contact to the past, is Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns. He was buried in Dumfries where he spent his last years. In addition to his mausoleum, the town has its own Burns Museum.

At Caerlaverock, which is less that 10 miles away and home to Britain's only triangular castle - one of the many castles in the region, The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust is situated where all species can be observed, and is very popular.

Shooting and Fishing - Fishing provides excellent sport and catches of salmon; trout etc are always recorded on the River Nith and River Cairn.

However if you are more interested in wildfowling or clay pigeon shooting there are local clubs all offering good sport.

Golf and Sailing - This area is well known for it's excellent golf courses and visitors are well catered for. Sailing on the Solway is very popular with Dumfries being only 20 minutes drive from the coast. It is a good base too, for the yachting clubs at Lochmaben and Loch Ken.

Exotic and Unusual - At Eskdalemuir we are very fortunate to have the unique Samye Ling Tibetan centre where many people enjoy a spiritual retreat. It is a Scottish Tourist Board attraction, open to daily visitors - like a day trip to Tibet but without the jetlag!

Gretna Green - If you wish to get married, then Gretna Green provides the most romantic occasion! It's also worth a visit to see the famous Blacksmith's Shop and the First house in Scotland to buy all the tartan souvenirs.

Something for everyone - With the unspoiled scenic richness of Galloway, Kirkcudbright the centre of art and culture, together with the gastronomic offerings in the restaurants, you will surely be well entertained. Or perhaps you would wish to provide your own and enjoy the beautiful secluded beaches and glens?
