  Inn Amenities

Coming down the hill on your approach to Hartland Quay Hotel you may well be in awe of quite what you have come across, but we are certain that when you have to go home again, you will be looking forward to the next time that you will see that sight. Situated at the bottom of a steep hill, this fantastic place is steeped in history.

The main building has been a hotel since 1886, but in days gone by it has been among other things, a bank, an oast house and the bar was the stables. Above the bar were the corn and hay lofts, which are now some of the bedrooms.

In what was the old stables there is a relaxing bar in which you can enjoy a pint, a delicious meal and a chat with the locals - should you wish to!

Here you will find a very friendly atmosphere, where children are welcomed and catered for.

There is a wide variety of choice on the menu to suit all tastes and very often fresh fish straight out of the sea.

The Wreckers' Retreat Bar contains relics of wrecks, including the 'Green Ranger' of 1962, when Hartland men played such a gallant part in rescuing the crew.

It is owned by the Stucley family who reside at the nearby Hartland Abbey and has been run by the Johns family for the last 40 years and is at present in the hands of the third generation of the family. Resident Managers: Chris and Jill Johns.

The hotel is open throughout the year except for Christmas and offers a warm family welcome at any time. The hotel has a large dining room offering table d’hote evening meals and a hearty english breakfast. There is a peaceful residents lounge to contemplate the day ahead and a public bar to enjoy a meal, take in the view or escape the wind!

Families are very welcome and we will do our best to help you with anything you require to make your stay more comfortable.

Meals and Snacks are available in the bar.
Packed Lunches can be supplied.
Guests are requested to bring their own towels for use on the beach.
Sorry no dogs permitted in public rooms.
FREE parking for resident's cars.
Officially licensed for weddings.
All Bedrooms, Dining room and Lounge are non-smoking rooms.
Weddings

Looking for somewhere different to get married? The dramatic and stunningly beautiful scenery with waves crashing onto Hartland's rocky outcrop, this is all part of the civil wedding package that Chris and Jill Johns of the Hartland Quay Hotel are able to offer, now that it's been officially licensed for weddings. A whole new meaning for 'marriage on the rocks'!

  Area Activities

Beach:
There is a slipway leading to a sandy and rocky beach that is ideal for families, where you can swim in the sea, fish in the rock pools or just lie there and enjoy the sunshine.

The Quay beach is safe for bathing and there are numerous exciting coves within walking and motoring distance.

Excellent sport may be obtained fishing for bass from the rocks immediately below the hotel where fish up to 6lbs have been caught.

Hartland Abbey - was built in 1169 and originally housed the monks who worshipped at the beautiful church of St Nectan's in Stoke.

It was dissolved in 1539 and was given as a gift to William Abbot, Henry VIII's chief butler seven years later.

It has passed through the family and is now owned by Sir Hugh Stucley and is open to the public. Not only is there the historic house to see but also the astonishing gardens. There are some beautiful walks down to the sea and teas to refresh you afterwards.

Hartland Point:
The Lighthouse has a beam that is visible from about 20 miles out to sea. There are excellent views up and down the rugged north coast from Hartland Point.

Coastal Walking:
As the hotel is situated directly on the South West Coast Path, it is an ideal base for a walking holiday or just a day trip to see our beautiful and dramatic coastline.

Whether a serious walker or simply looking for an afternoon stroll there are walks to suit all abilities.

There are books, maps and details of walks in the area available. There is a luggage transfer service available for those of you who wish to walk without the extra weight of your rucksack. We can also provide packed lunches to see you through the day ahead.

Spekes Mill Mouth:
Twenty minutes walk South of Hartland Quay is the famous and most beautiful waterfall on the north Devon coast is that of Spekes Mill Mouth.

The two streams that rise on the high ground of Bursdon Moor meet near Lymebridge and wind their way through the secluded Spekes Valley before cascading down a shear rock face sixty feet, through a series of four smaller falls before finely reaching the sea.

At low tide there are often sandy stretches running down to the shore. Surfers like to visit Spekes Mill for it's renowned reef brake, yet it remains peaceful and quiet even at the height of summer.

Docton Mill :
Situated only 1,400 yards from the famous Spekes Mill Mouth Coastal Waterfall, the garden at Docton Mill was created in 1980 around the existing river, waterways, leats and ponds.
