  Inn Amenities

It is beautifully located in the hills above Glossop in the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire, offering luxury B&B accommodation with outstanding views all round, all at very competitive prices.

Peace and tranquillity everywhere, with only the cry of the curlew and the sheep, panoramic views all round, the brilliant purples of the heather on the hillsides in August - all this and yet only 40 minutes or so from Manchester, Stockport, and Manchester Airport.

Rock Farm started off offering bed and breakfast accommodation in 1993, after realising that not only were we in an ideal position both for tourists and for business people alike, but that the layout of the house was particularly suitable for B&B. We only take one "party" at a time (a party being anything from 1 - 5 people) which means that guests have their own bathroom, dining room and lounge available all day, all quite separate from the family part of the house.

Both bedrooms are south-facing, and look out over views extending over the hills of the High Peak, with Kinder Scout, the highest hill in the Peak District, visible to the left. The bedrooms are reached by means of an open stone carpeted stairway from the dining room, which is thought at one time to have been a dairy. Both rooms are very well equipped, with clock radios, tea-making facilities, hairdryers, and colour televisions. Alternatively, we have a good supply of videos that you can watch, and there is a nearby video rental store in Glossop that you could use, as well.

A beamed landing connects the two bedrooms to the bathroom. Bedrooms and bathroom all have exposed beams

A wood burning stove in the dining room provides additional warmth in the winter, as well as adding nicely to the cosy atmosphere of the house, although there is central heating and full carpeting throughout.

The guest lounge is also south-facing, looking out over extensive views, and can be used by guests throughout the day, which can be especially welcome if the weather turns bad. A range of books and maps is available to help plan what to do, and there is also a selection of games to play. There is a television with teletext and a video.

Dogs and children are very welcome, we are able to accommodate horses.

Hearty farmhouse breakfasts, are provided as a norm, but vegetarian breakfasts, or lighter breakfasts are available if required. We don't normally do evening meals, just because there are many good pubs nearby which do excellent meals at very reasonable prices. Some of these are even within walking distance, if you're relatively energetic. Packed lunches can also be provided if advance notice is given.

  Area Activities

We are extremely well-placed for a whole string of activities.

Chief among these of course, given our location in the hills of the Peak District, is walking. We are situated at the junction of 4 way-marked footpaths, so providing the facility for going for walks straight from the front door, without the need for transport. The Pennine Way is easily accessible; indeed the start of it is not many miles away in Edale. We are also ideally placed for the Pennine Bridleway linking Cumbria to Derbyshire.

Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District, can not only be seen from your bedroom window, but you can walk up to the top of it from our doorway, again without the need for transport, and pick up the Pennine Way from there. On the way, you can see one of the many wrecks of World War II planes which have now become national landmarks, and you can see Kinder Downfall, which, when the wind gusts up the valley, presents the unusual phenomenon of a waterfall going upwards!

The Woolpacks, a series of unusual glacial and weatherworn rocks on the top of Kinder Scout are also well worth seeing.

Local registered guides are available for those who would like to combine a walk with an interesting talk on the many interesting features and folklore in the area.

As well as walking in the area, you can also play golf nearby, or go horse riding, sailing, gliding, ballooning, and cycling at centres where the necessary equipment can usually be hired.

Whether you like walking, or touring by car, or both, there are many interesting places to visit in the Peak District. We have a selection of guide books, maps, and other literature in the lounge and in the bedrooms to help you plan what to do.

Manchester is only 40 minutes away where there are a whole wealth of theatres, cinemas, interesting working museums, shops, and other places of interest. Again our stock of literature can provide many ideas, whatever your tastes. (Some of our guests have stayed with us for the sole purpose of visiting Manchester United, either to see the stars practising in the morning and then to talk with them afterwards, or, when they've been lucky enough, to watch them play at Old Trafford)
