B&B Location

Tarn House is situated two miles from Ravenstondale, a peaceful and unspoilt village in the upper Eden valley in Cumbria. It lies between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks. Although quiet and secluded Ravenstonedale is easily accessed from the M6 and from the A1.

Inn Amenities

Of note are the two huge sandstone arches above the fireplaces in the kitchen and dining room.
The landscape is untamed, desolate, unyielding, but always, even in the worst weather, incredibly beautiful.

The Tarn attracts many species of birds and other wildlife.

We have only recently moved to Tarn House but have farmed in Ravenstonedale for the past 16 years. We have four children: two boys, who are both interested in farming and two girls, who feel that there must be an easier way to make a living!

We produce lamb and beef, on a traditional hill farm, keeping the use of pesticides, fertilisers and veterinary medicines to a minimum. Wherever possible we use our own, or locally sourced products.

Fortunately, we escaped Foot & Mouth disease, even though it came to within half a mile of the farm, so we still have 1000 Swaledale sheep, 40 beef cattle, 20 hens, 5 sheepdogs and one thoroughly obnoxious goat!
