  Area Activities

Within walking distance...

Explore the Victorian villages of Lynton & Lynmouth; Lynton with its high rugged cliffs and Lynmouth with its harbour and bay. In the victorian times they were known as 'Little Switzerland of England' due to the 600ft difference in height. The two villages are joined by a unique water driven cliff railway. There are a variety and varied interests for the visitor.

Ride on the unique water powered Cliff Railway, which drops 600 feet from Lynton to the sea at Lynmouth. It was started in 1887 and completed in 1890. The cliff railway works on a simple balancing principle. As water is discharged from the lower carriage, the greater weight of the higher carriage then causes the carriage to descend and pulls the lower carriage up the cliff.

Walk along the wooded river valley to Watersmeet, or along the spectacular coastal footpath. Here, Exmoor truly meets the sea, where the purple hues of heather and glorious yellow gorse cascade down to the sea.

Explore Hollerday Hill with its magnificent coastal views of the Heritage coast or stroll into the Valley of Rocks with its mysterious rock formations and herd of wild goats.

Buzzards, red deer and Exmoor ponies flourish in this area of rare unspoilt beauty.
