For an active outdoor vacation you’ll find it is hard to beat, Scotland is well known for its mountainous and beautiful scenery and the northern ‘Highlands’ and Islands’ are the setting for adventure, seeing rugged, unspoilt yet amazing scenery. Apart from the beautiful natural landscapes, why not play a round of golf or two, or take a day’s angling on some of the silent hill lochs? You’ll be spoilt for choice from historic castles to visit to mountain climbing, pony trekking, cycling, hiking, sea fishing as well as river and excellent loch fishing. Experience the joy of seeing a buzzard perched by the roadside, or watch as the seals play on the surf below.
Elegant Inverness the capital of the Highlands set on the River Ness and if you walk along the banks of the river you’ll spot seals catching salmon. The city is a bustling place with an excellent shopping choice in the Victorian-style market arcade, restaurants and bars for a “wee dram of whisky”, or you can go on a dolphin-watching, boat trips and cruises on Loch Ness. It is also the hub for visiting the captivating surrounding areas with numerous historic buildings including St. Andrew’s Cathedral and the impressive 18th century castle. Travel to the picturesque Loch Ness a vast and beautiful body of water forming part of the Great Glen where the legendary Nessy “lives”, he may not appear, but the spectacular breathtaking scenery is always on show, however, the Urquhart Castle a 14th century ruin situated on the banks at the deepest part of Loch Ness is a must visit. Surrounded by tranquil lochs, pine forests and the snow-capped peaks of the picturesque Cairngorms Mountains, the region offers a good range of historic sites and castles, as well as Europe's best-preserved 18th-century fort at Fort George.
A trip to the coastal region of the western shores for some of the finest of Highland scenery should not go amiss. Royal Deeside has long been a favourite retreat of Royalty, The River Dee, famous for its salmon fishing, starts its ninety-mile journey high up in the Cairngorm Mountains and then flows down through some of Scotland’s finest scenery, this wonderful area is dominated by the marvellous castles and stately homes that abound here. Visit the picturesque village of Ballater which boasts more ‘By Royal Appointment’ sign than anywhere else in Scotland, or you can visit Balmoral Castle the summer residence of Her Majesty the Queen or the Crathie Church in Balmoral, the church used by the Royals whilst in residence.
Follow in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie and see landscapes that have barely changed since his battle days during the 18th century at Fort William a popular town surrounded by mountains, glens and lochs and its museum houses a famous hidden portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie, 1720 – 1788 The "Young Pretender" and grandson of James VII of Scotland who was exiled by William of Orange. About an hour’s drive you may wish to seek out the rather unusual features, such as the ancient bone caves, the prehistoric depths of Corrieshaloch Gorge and its evidence of prehistoric creatures that once roamed Scotland's glens and mountains. Hiking in the area is excellent and you’ll come across pretty villages dotted amidst the glens and rivers. East of Inverness, the hills gradually give way to the narrow and sheltered lowland strip around the edge of the Moray Firth surrounded by an appealing combination of cliff scenery and fine sandy beaches, it’s also where you’ll find magnificent golf courses.
If you travel up north, you’ll come to the Orkney Isles, a beautiful cluster of over seventy magical island dotted with fir and heather-clad islands giving off a riotous profusion of colour that are something to be seen to be believed and the contrasting scenery will leave you spellbound full of headlands and sheltered lagoons located off the northern-most tip of Scotland and some of Britain’s highest cliffs. Not far away you’ll find the impressive picture book setting of Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most-photographed castles anywhere in Scotland with spectacular views overlooking three lochs, Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh all being used for several films, such as "Highlander", James Bond “The World is Not Enough" and "Braveheart".
Perth makes an excellent base from which to tour the Highlands and Islands and the stunning beauty of Perthshire. Skiing for both style and character are Glenshee, Cairngorm, The Lecht, Nevis Range and Glencoe. Three other major mountain ranges include Ben Nevis, Ben Macdui and the Cairngorm region of the Grampians and the Cheviot Hills. Discover Blair Castle dating from the 13th century and home of the Atholl Highlanders, Europe’s only private army, which is set amid ancient landscaped grounds. It has a magnificent setting in 2,500 acres of grounds within an estate of over 145,000 acres where hiking, cycling, fishing, deer stalking and grouse shooting is available. You can play golf in magnificent scenery, fish fast running rivers or just enjoy walking the countryside, the area is full of attractions and activities for the visitor to enjoy with bed and breakfast, Highlands, Islands and Central Scotland in picture-postcard villages and localities.
Aberdeen oozes with character and is known locally as the ‘granite city’ and famed for its award-winning parks and gardens and offer a wide range of excellent attractions and activities. Drum Castle with its stunning scenery and a good choice of boat trips for close encounters with sea-caves, sea-stacks, seals and dolphins. You’ll find a wealth of things to see and do leaving you as relaxed or invigorated as you wish. Check out the local distillery and a chance to taste single malt whiskies, or enjoy a cruise through the dramatic scenery along the waters of Loch Katrine. Central Scotland is an area of beautiful varied countryside and id home to the contrasting landscapes of Fife, the only survivor of Scotland’s seven original Pictish Kingdoms. Why not check out St. Andrews the home of golf in the ‘Kingdom of Fife’ or a ferry to the ancient capital of Shetland, Isle, these unspoilt islands are a treasure trove of historical interest and timeless freedom. Where you will experience complete peace and quiet and an enchanting untamed and beautiful landscape.
