The East of England offers a wide range of places to visit, not only does it boast a fine heritage of architecture with picturesque villages, but it has some of the most unspoilt countryside in Britain with diverse landscapes. Enjoy peaceful gardens and waterside pubs, miles upon miles of coastline full of fascinating maritime connections to explore, glorious golden sandy beaches, historic houses, ancient monuments, museums, galleries and wonderful old mills. Family fun can be found in the theme parks and for horse-racing fans can enjoy the sport of kings.
You’ll definitely find chocolate-box scenes of beautifully kept cottages in quaint villages. No wonder great landscape painters like Constable and Gainsborough choose East Anglia for inspiration. Further south you’ll find the coast opens out into wide estuaries where flora and fauna abounds, no wonder that it is renowned as one of the best places in the country for bird watching. Oh, and look out for the ghosts of Oliver Cromwell and other mysterious phantoms. The region is perfect for cycling, with quiet country lanes and tracks, gently rolling countryside, pretty timber-framed villages and historic market towns. With over 250 miles of coastline, the East of England is a great place to discover maritime history and heritage. Cambridgeshire is where you’ll find the impressive Norman Cathedral, known locally as the 'Ship of the Fens', or you can explore Framlingham Castle, a fine late 12th Century castle, architecturally, the castle is notable for its curtain wall and mural towers. Take the walk around the famous walls and feel 900 years worth of history under your feet and see spectacular views, Mary Tudor stayed here in 1553, before being crowned Queen. But don’t forget to explore the 17th century family estate of Oliver Cromwell and his famous haunted bedroom in Ely.

Cambridge, the place of Universities and boats, it is also full of beauty and should be explored to its fullest. Historic Cambridge one of the most attractive cities in England, has so much to offer the visitor from major retailer shopping, theatres, ancient monuments and golf courses with an exciting 18 hole golf course complete with all weather driving range and open to the public. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford, Cambridgeshire is worthy of a visit and why not marvel at the stunning views of the Cambridge colleges whilst relaxing on a river punt, or stroll through Hayley Wood, Cambridge’s beautiful forest of ancient woodlands of oak, ash and maple. These woods are home to many breeding birds, and during the summer months it is filled with wild flowers whilst in spring, the woodland floor is a blanket of bluebells and oxlips for which the wood is famous, listen to the Great Spotted Woodpeckers drumming, while in May or June you’ll be able to hear Nightingales singing.

There are magnificent historic houses and museums to view with priceless treasures all over the region. The All Saints Church in Cambridge in particular is one of the finest examples of Gothic revival architecture in the country. The East of England is home to the largest collection of Cathedrals, Peterborough Cathedral is awe-inspiring with its stunning West Front and unique 13th Century nave ceiling with fantastic monsters and beasts sculptures. It is the burial place of two Queens and their gravedigger (Robert Scarlet) and the final resting place of Henry VIII’s first Queen, Katherine of Aragon. Tour the lovely rural Suffolk with its pretty villages and where Gainsborough the great painter was born, a place full of water meadows and willow trees. There is also a special Lord Nelson trail through the county of Norfolk and the city offers the Norwich Aviation Museum. On the seafront at Great Yarmouth you’ll find Pleasure Beach, a nine- acre leisure park featuring over 70 rides and attractions and entry is free. The Pleasure Beach was nominated in the top 10 of all leisure parks in the country with over 1.5 million visitors a year and where you scream till you can scream no more. The Broads is a marvellous national park of lowland and water based protected area and linked together by miles of river passing charming villages with large medieval churches in the beautiful open countryside. In Norwich there is the tomb of Nosey Parker, great shopping and the Cathedral with the second highest spire and largest monastic cloisters in England. Seek out the medieval “schoolteacher and his naughty pupil” and see for yourself the unique 1200 year old Bishop’s throne.

Thetford Forest Park is a wonderful place for relaxation and recreation. It can be explored from any of the picnic sites scattered across the forest. It is a haven for wildlife and there is a good chance of seeing deer, cross bills, nightjars and more. There are guided walks, fantastic bird-watching opportunities, children’s activity days and outdoor arts and music events are always available during the warmer months. For something a bit unusual why not try out the ‘Go Ape’ and experience the excitement of aerial trekking through the heart of Thetford Forest. Enjoy a day out at the reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village in West Stow, set on the site of the original settlement.

Explore historic cities, towns and villages including Stevenage, St. Albans, Ipswich and Colchester and discover antique shops and centres brimming with precious objects and family fun, or go sailing in leading yachting centres. You’ll find a series of pretty river estuaries and creeks, once the haunt of smugglers, and today a haven for yachting enthusiasts. If that is not to your fancy, then why not relax in one of the coastal restaurants and enjoy oysters, reputed as being the best since Roman times. ‘Shop till you Drop’ offer some great retail therapy in the East of England, with traditional open-air market towns and antique hunting can also be undertaken in the region. Chelmsford Cathedral is the smallest cathedral in England, see the dragon that looks down from on high and the monument to wealthy Mr Mildmay who worked for Queen Elizabeth I. Royston Cave in Hertfordshire has an incredible man-made cave with medieval carvings made by the Knights Templar dating from around AD1310. It is said that it may well be a possible secret meeting place for initiations. Carvings are of the saints: Christopher, Katherine, Lawerence and George and a figure being burned at the stake, there is also a ritual grave, a Templar and a 19th Century graffiti.

For thrills and spills that will knock your socks off you should try the Essex Theme rides and Adventure Island, there are other exciting rides and attractions including a rollercoaster, big wheel fantasy dome, sky lab, giant pirate ship and Dragons Claws. The Archelon, the only ride of its kind in the UK, Blackbeard’s Pirate Adventure, Pharoah’s Fury, the Green Scream Rollercoaster, Raging River Log Flume and the Tidal Wave Water Chute, and finally the Fireball, the only one of its kind in Europe.
